Scorpio’s 12GB RAM means no real technical limit for some years

Project Scorpio

Project Scorpio is quite a technical masterpiece within console gaming. Where other consoles fail due to their limitations and are still not able to reach the waters of the PC, the Scorpio wants to be better at those points. To achieve that, Microsoft will be using a semi-custom chip made by AMD which includes 12GB of GDDR5 RAM that, according to Stardock CEO Brad Wardell has “no real technical limit on games”.

That’s even when considering the actual allocation available to developers (8GB, while PS4 Pro allows developers to occupy 5.5GB).

The Nitrous Engine

According to Wardwell, in order to achieve the maximum of power of new low-level APIs like DirectX 12 (also available on Scorpio) and Vulkan, game developers need a core neutral engine and only Stardock/Oxide’s Nitrous engine (Ashes of Singularity) will be able to fit the technical requirements. This will also be a penalty for other studios not using their engine.

There’s also the rumor of a new AAA game made by the Nitrous engine coming up.
